Selangor Umno has withdrawn a motion calling for a study on the feasibility of implementing hudud in the state, said opposition leader Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias.
Shamsudin (pic) said the motion had been misunderstood as too many Chinese newspapers had contacted him on it.
“It is not a member’s bill. It is only to ask the state government whether they want to implement hudud (or not),” he said today.
Shamsuddin said the withdrawing the motion was normal for any political party.
“We had discussed this in the BN pre-council meeting. But now as there is a lot misinterpretation we have decided to call it off,” he said.
However, he said, the Barisan Nasional assemblypersons will raise the matter during the meeting.
Shamsudin also said they will ask PAS if it had any intention to implement hudud in Selangor.
“We will ask them this during question time and during the debates,” he said.
Meanwhile, Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh has come out in defence of her decision to allow the hudud debate in the state legislative assembly, saying that her approval is based on her role as speaker for all parties in the state.
“When I am the speaker, I am no longer a DAP or Pakatan Rakyat member. I am neutral. My personal view does not matter,” Hannah Yeoh told a press conference today.
Prominent lawyer Tommy Thomas yesterday criticised Yeoh for allowing the hudud debate to be held in the state legislature, saying that it was unconstitutional, while MCA Selangor state liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said the debate on hudud was not important. – June 13, 2014.
